Hydro-excavation is a non-destructive digging and excavation process that uses pressurized water and a powerful vacuum system to remove soil. Hydrovac units are equipped with handgun wands that precisely cut into the soil via pressurized water. As the soil loosens, the truck's boom is extended out to vacuum up the debris into the truck's holding tank where it is either disposed of offsite or placed back into the excavation site. In the past, excavation has always been performed using tractors and heavy equipment, but more recently excavation with hydrovac units, a process called hydro-excavation, is gaining popularity due to its precision and clear safety benefits.

COMMON USES OF HYDROVACS

Hydrovacs are ideal for slot trenching. Slot trenching is digging narrow trenches for the purpose of installing cables, pipeline, posts, and underground utilities. Hydro-excavation is the best option for slot trenching due to its precision and safety. Hydrovac units can navigate tight areas (thanks to their boom) that conventional excavation equipment just can't reach. In addition to being the most precise and exact technique to perform slot trenching, hydro-excavation can dig very narrow trenches that are not able to be done by other equipment. This alleviates the need to backfill, as only the areas that need to be excavated are disturbed.

A hydrovac is also used for the installation of utility poles, signs, fence posts, and other components that need to be placed deep into the ground at a certain depth. A hydrovac truck can precisely excavate the right depth and diameter with ease. Traditional excavation equipment just can't do this. In the same way that hydrovacs can accurately excavate for slot trenching, a hydrovac only affects the immediate area, eliminating the need to backfill unlike with traditional methods used for piling hole digging.

Potholing and daylighting are becoming a very common tasks for hydrovac operators. This is the process of exposing already installed underground utilities before beginning new infrastructure work, repairs to existing utilities, or new residential work. Hydro excavation is a non-destructive digging process, as the water and vacuum used to excavate does not cause damage to these hidden underground utilities. Unlike traditional methods such as shovels and backhoes which can cause great damage to underground utilities and pose safety risks to operators, hydro excavation can safely excavate around the utilities and expose them. Using a hydrovac for these types of projects is accurate, efficient, and safe.
